Ayushman Bharat Yojana is the world’s largest health insurance scheme introduced by the Government of India and is also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). The scheme was launched as part of the National Health Policy 2017, which aims to provide universal health coverage (UHC) to all citizens of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme on September 23, 2018, in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
Ayushman Bharat has brought about a significant change in the healthcare system in India. It aims to provide hassle-free treatment in hospitals to poor and vulnerable families. The scheme has two major components, namely Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), to enable access to all services, including simple and sophisticated care.
Primary Objective of Ayushman Bharat Yojana
The primary objective of the scheme is to provide free and cashless health insurance to millions of poor families in India. Under this scheme, free medical care up to Rs 5 lakh per family is provided to the family irrespective of the level of illness.
The scheme covers 107.4 million poor and vulnerable families (about 500 million people) – it is the largest health care scheme in the world. The families are selected as per the SECC 2011 data. The cost of financing the scheme is shared by the central and state governments.
