Atal Pension Yojana (APY): Retirement Security for the Unorganised Workforce
Overview of the Scheme
Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a government-backed social security initiative designed to provide a stable pension after retirement. It is open to savings bank account holders aged 18 to 40 years who are not income taxpayers. The scheme mainly supports workers from the unorganised sector by helping them build a regular retirement income and reduce financial risks associated with old age.
Key Objective of APY
The primary aim of APY is to ensure financial protection in old age for economically weaker sections, low-income groups, and individuals working outside the formal employment system.
Target Beneficiaries
- Poor and underprivileged citizens
- Workers in the unorganised sector
- Individuals without access to formal pension benefits
Subscriber Contribution Details
The monthly contribution under APY depends on the subscriber’s age at entry and the pension amount chosen.
The official contribution chart is available at:

Charges, Penalties and Overdue Interest
If the prescribed contribution is not paid on time, penalties and overdue interest are charged. These charges are decided by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) in consultation with the Central Government and may change periodically.
Grievance Redressal System
Subscribers can lodge grievances free of cost at any time through:
npscra.nsdl.co.in
Path: Home → Select NPS-Lite / CGMS → Register Grievance
A token number is generated, which can be used to track the complaint status online.

After the death of both the subscriber and spouse, the accumulated pension wealth (as on age 60) is paid to the nominee.
Tax Benefits
Contributions made to APY are eligible for tax deductions under Section 80CCD(1), similar to benefits available under the National Pension System (NPS).
Exit Provisions
Voluntary Exit Before 60 Years
If a subscriber exits APY before the age of 60:
- Only the subscriber’s own contributions plus net accrued returns are refunded after deducting maintenance charges.
- Subscribers who joined before 31 March 2016 and received a Government co-contribution will not receive that amount or its returns upon exit.
In Case of Death Before 60 Years
Option 1: Continuation by Spouse
The spouse may continue the APY account by contributing until the original subscriber would have turned 60. The spouse will then receive the same pension for life. This benefit is available even if the spouse already has an APY account.
Option 2: Withdrawal of Corpus
The entire accumulated pension corpus is returned to the spouse or nominee.
